The Asian Female Tourist Gaze: A Conceptual Framework

This book chapter endeavors to present the emic voices of the Asian female tourist, specifically, interpreted from a Singaporean perspective. It aims to highlight the kaleidoscope of cultural- and gender-based elements that constitute the Asian female gaze, and dispel misconceptions and over generalization of the universal tourist gaze. There is currently limited research undertaken by Asian academics on the contemporary Asian female traveler and how gazes are constructed and performed during the travel experiences of Asian female travelers. This chapter will introduce a conceptual model to examine the Asian female gaze in tourism settings and contribute to a larger, expanding corpus of work examining gender, culture and tourist gaze in the contemporary globalized world.
